Description
signed, titled, numbered and dated 'Slater Bradley 2005 Explosions in the Sea #2 ed. 3/3 (on the backing board); signed again, numbered again and dated again 'Slater Bradley 2005 ed. 3/3' (on the stretcher)
chromogenic print, flush-mounted to board
80 x 60 in. (203.2 x 152.4 cm.)
Executed in 2005. This work is number three from an edition of three.
In the present lot, Slater Bradley employs an experimental technique involving converting an original low resolution file from a basic digital camera to a film negative, and then printing the final image as a chromogenic print. At the time, the artist was exploring new ways to create images with a pixelated quality as a reflection on the increase of digital technologies in contemporary culture.

Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Explosions in the Sea #2 by Slater Bradley was auctioned at Christies in New York in July 2017, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 3,000.00 – 5,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 2,500.00 (€ 2,113.99). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Slater Bradley achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Ladies and Gentlemen We are Floating in Space (02) in May 2012 with an auction result of USD 32,500.00 (€ 26,285.99).
