A world-famous contemporary artist whose identity is virtually unknown - this contradictory idea applies to the street artist who operates under the pseudonym Banksy. At best, it is public knowledge that Banksy was born in Bristol, presumably around 1974 - his civil name remains a secret, even though there have been many speculations about his person. The idea that he is part of a collective has also been mooted.
His graffiti guerrilla actions, for which he is known today, started in Bristol: his spray art, applied by means of stencil technology, first adorned Bristol's street art scene, later London's and ultimately also those worldwide. As is usual for the scene, his images appeared virtually overnight and pop-up-like on every conceivable public space. With his artworks, Banksy primarily criticises the economy, politics and society; he causes an uproar and draws attention to social ills.
His actions often come in the form of mischievous sideswipes and usually leave those not affected with a smile on their faces afterwards. Recently, it is often performances with which he triggers controversy. For example, he has unnoticedly placed his works in renowned museums such as the Tate Modern in London or the Louvre in Paris, or put a doll with Guantanamo prisoner clothing in Disneyland California. He also produces works for charitable purposes, such as for the environmental organisation Greenpeace.
In October 2018, he once again made his form of subversive criticism plastic - this time for the buyer of one of his works: his famous »Girl with Balloon« destroyed itself by means of a shredder hidden in the frame shortly after the last bid at the auction house Sotheby's - it would have been worth the equivalent of 1.18 million euros to the highest bidder.

More recent stories revolve around Neil Buchanan, the former host of the children's art programme Art Attack, Robert Del Naja, frontman of the band Massive Attack, and Robin Gunningham, an unknown who was born in Bristol in 1973, moved to London in the 2000s and also performs as a street artist.
Everything that is known for sure about Banksy fits the theory around Gunningham: the street art, the vintage, the birthplace Bristol and the adopted home of London in the early 2000s. The man from Bristol could have potentially exposed himself with a photo in which stencils were seen that show an astonishing closeness to Banksy's style. However, none of the speculations have been substantiated to date. The partly creative ideas for Banksy's name read like possible solutions to an exciting detective game that no one knows whether it will ever be fully unravelled.
It is impossible to determine an exact number of Banksy works, especially since they keep appearing and disappearing on others. They are created through reproducible stencils that are often imitated, which also makes originals not immediately obvious. His best-known works include Girl with Baloon, various versions of his Rats and Flower Thrower. The 4.5 m wide and 2.8 m high Devolved Parliament is probably Banksy's best-known painting outside of street art.
Although there are different rumours circulating about the identity of the street artist Banksy, it has not actually been revealed. The latest theory, that Banksy could be Bristol-born street artist Robin Gunningham, currently seems the most likely.
For any other artist, the answer to this question would probably be a resounding »no«. In 2021, however, Banksy found himself in a pickle when it came to copyright, which was threatened with expiry if he did not reveal his identity. The debate was triggered by a greeting card company that wanted to use Banksy's Laugh Now for its own purposes. In court, the company was proven right, because Banksy's anonymity made it impossible to make trademark rights valid. But even this legal dispute did not prevent the unknown artist from remaining hidden. This was not a big surprise, after all, he had already lost the rights to the world-famous motifs Flower Thrower (Jerusalem), Girl with an Umbrella (London) and Radar Rat (New Orleans). Nevertheless, he found himself in a quandary. In 2006, after being asked about the use of his ideas, he said, »Copywright is for losers« – but the statement was in no way meant to deny anyone's intellectual property rights, let alone commercialise them. In principle, Banksy images can be used freely, but from a moral point of view it is best to do so only on a private level.
