The artist Ross Bleckner

  • US-American painter and graphic artist who creates image flickers using blurred lines.
  • Studied with Sol LeWitt and Chuck Close in New York.
  • He started experimenting with Op Art in the 1980s.

Ross Bleckner, born 12 May 1949 in New York City, is a contemporary American painter and graphic artist. Bleckner's art thrives on providing silhouettes that initially appear clear with a washed-out effect through blurring. Not infrequently, he creates light glow effects that format themselves into effective starry skies, even though flying seagulls or abstract objects are hidden behind the supposed celestial bodies. Bleckner regularly creates such »border crossers« with this flickering of images, his trademark.

Some of his works are dominated by the heavy dark background, while others are more characterised by the interplay of bright, milky-opaque ground tones and red blurring floral motifs. Bleckner, who grew up on Long Island, New York, was initially inspired to study art in 1965 after seeing the exhibition The Responsive Eye at the Museum of Modern Art.

He attended New York University and the California Institute of the Arts between 1971 and 1973, graduating with a Master of Fine Arts. His fellow students included Sol LeWitt and Chuck Close, and he also maintained contact with Peter Salle during his studies. In 1974 Bleckner lived in an elevator building in Tribeca, New York, popular among artists, which housed the Mudd Club, a popular musicians' and artists' establishment, until 1983.

His first solo exhibition took place shortly after his graduation in 1975 at the Mary Boone Gallery. In the 1980s, he experimented with Op Art with his strip paintings, the typical illusionary effects of which still run through his works today. Today Bleckner still lives and works in his hometown New York.

Ross Bleckner, geb.
