The artist Jules Olitski

  • Ukrainian-American painter and sculptor of colour field painting.
  • Made a name for himself in the 1960s with his refined application of colour.
  • Was honoured with memberships in Honor Societies such as the Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Jules Olitski, born 27.03.1922 in Snowsk, Ukraine, as Jewel Demikowski, deceased 04.02.2007 in New York was a Ukrainian-US-American painter and sculptor of abstract art. The abstract artist is considered one of the best-known exponents of colour field painting, which helped him achieve his breakthrough in the 1960s. During this period, he began experimenting with the application of colour. The resulting unconventional surface textures ran through his life's work from then on.

From the mid-1960s onwards, he also occasionally used spray cans and developed his abstract pictorial language even further in this way. This aesthetic is very aptly characterised by the international Ketterer art auction house, for example, with a »cloudy-indifferent« effect. Olitski's family was forced to flee the Soviet Union in 1923, when the future artist was one year old, after his father was executed by the government of the time.

In this way, he arrived in the USA as a small child and grew up in the New York borough of Brooklyn. At the beginning of the Second World War, Olitski studied at the National Academy of Design in New York and at the Beaux-Arts Institute of Design in New York. In 1942, he interrupted his studies due to his military service, but continued them from 1949 onwards at the Academie Grande Chaumiere in Paris with Ossip Zadkine and completed them in 1954 with a Master of Arts at New York University.

He then turned to colour field painting. In 1968, during his heyday, he was represented at the 4th documenta. His reputation was crowned with memberships in various (honorary) societies: in 1991 the American Academy of Arts and Sciences accepted him into its circle, in 1994 the National Academy in New York and in 2006 the American Academy of Arts and Letters, also in New York. Olitski died in 2007 shortly before his 85th birthday as a result of cancer.

Jules Olitski, geb.

Zu Kriegsbeginn studierte Olitski an der  National Academy of Design in New York sowie am Beaux-Arts Institute of Design in New York.
