EDWARD KIENHOLZ (1927-1994) Portrait of a Young Girl signed 'KIENHOLZ' (lower right); signed again, titled and dated 'PORTRAIT OF A YOUNG GIRL KIENHOLZ '56' (on the reverse) oil, resin, sand, nails and found wood assemblage on panel, in artist's frame 28 1 ⁄ 2 x 23 in. (72.4 x 58.4 cm.) Executed in 1956.

Artwork auctioned at five times the upper estimate price

The work Portrait of a Young Girl by Edward Kienholz was worth USD 37,800.00 (€ 37,051.56) to a buyer in July last year. This price was achieved in the auction First Open | Post-War & Contemporary Art at Christies in New York and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of USD 7,000.00 many times over. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Edward Kienholz - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work The Future as an Afterthought, which sold at auction in May 2003 for USD 141,900.00 (€ 120,601.73).
