Carroll Dunham, born on 5 November 1949 in New Haven (Connecticut), is an American artist who focuses on painting, drawing, printmaking, mixed media and sculpture. He graduated from Trinity College in Hartford in 1972 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and then moved to New York. There he worked as an assistant to the painter Dorothea Rockburne, as a graphic artist at Time Magazine and finally as a teacher at Columbia University. Since the early 1980s, he has developed a concise formal language within his art, which is recognisable in all his works and which he continues to develop.
In 2002, the New Museum in New York City showed his retrospective, which was also exhibited at Millesgården in Stockholm in 2008. Dunham has been represented at a number of Whitney Biennials and received the Skowhegan Medal for Painting in 2004. His work can be found in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Whitney Museum of American Art (New York City), the Tate Gallery (London) and the Walker Art Center (Minneapolis), among others.
