Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Piet Mondrian achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in New York in May last year. In the Modern Day Auction auction, the work Chrysanthemum sold for USD 579,600.00 (€ 540,117.42) - well above the upper estimate of USD 250,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Piet Mondrian achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Composition No. III, with Red, Blue, Yellow, and Black, 1929 in May 2015 with an auction result of USD 50,565,000.00 (€ 45,993,269.06).
