The artist Gertrude Abercrombie

  • US surrealist artist.
  • Chicago jazz scene had influences on her paintings.
  • Received the nickname »Queen of the Bohemian Artists«.

Gertrude Abercrombie was born on 17 February 1909 in Austin, Texas. In 1916 the family moved to Chicago, where Abercrombie lived for the rest of her life. She first studied Romance languages, from 1929 drawing at the Art Institute of Chicago and commercial art at the American Academy of Art. Her first job was drawing gloves for advertising and sales posters.

In 1933, Abercrombie sold one of her works for the first time at a small art fair in Chicago. She went into business for herself as an artist and quickly became known on the city scene. In the 30s and 40s she also made woodcuts. Abercrombie played the piano excellently, and was particularly good at improvisation. From 1948, she and her second husband were active in the city's jazz scene and were friends with numerous musicians such as Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker and Sara Vaughan. They regularly hosted parties and jam sessions at their home in the Hyde Park neighbourhood.

Music inspired Abercrombie to create her small-scale paintings, which are usually complex symbolic portraits or enigmatic landscapes and interiors. Her works are informed by personal experience and emotion. They are part of the specifically American response to surrealism originating in Europe. Dizzy Gillespie called Abercrombie »the first bop artist. Bop in the sense that she has taken the essence of our music and transported it to another art form«.

From the late 50s, the artist lived in seclusion. Arthritis, alcoholism and financial difficulties marked the last years of her life, and she was confined to a wheelchair. The Hyde Park Art Center organised a major retrospective of her work in 1977, and Abercrombie died shortly afterwards on 3 July. Since the late 2010s, her work has been gradually unveiled as part of the exploration of surrealist women painters of the 20th century. Museums such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Illinois State Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Smithsonian American Art Museum have works by the painter in their collections.

Die Künstlerin Gertrude Abercrombie

  • US-amerikanische surrealistische Künstlerin.
  • Chicagoer Jazzszene hatte Einflüsse auf ihre Gemälde.
  • Erhielt den Spitznamen »Königin der Bohème-Künstler«.

Gertrude Abercrombie wurde am 17. Februar 1909 in Austin, Texas, geboren.
