Description
London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, and Searle, 1873-1874. Complete set of four volumes illustrated with 219 collotypes on 96 leaves. Each collotype numbered in the negative; 'Malta Garrison Library' stamp on the reverse of each plate. Folio, maroon cloth covers with gilt title and decorations, leather spine.

The work Illustrations of China and Its People. A Series of Two Hundred Photographs, with Letterpress Description of the Places and People Represented by John Thomson was auctioned at Phillips in New York in October 2017. The auction ended at the price of USD 25,000.00 (€ 21,462.91), which exactly corresponded to the upper end of the estimated price range of USD 15,000.00 – 25,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by John Thomson achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Hillside On Big Cauchon Lake - Algonquin Park in June 2010 with an auction result of CAD 462,500.00 (€ 354,767.72).

Die Arbeit Illustrations of China and Its People. A Series of Two Hundred Photographs, with Letterpress Description of the Places and People Represented von John Thomson kam im Oktober 2017 bei Phillips in New York zur Auktion. Das dabei erzielte Ergebnis von USD 25.000,00 (€ 21.462,91) entsprach exakt dem oberen Ende der Schätzpreisspanne von USD 15.000,00 – 25.000,00. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von John Thomson erzielen.
