The artist Helen Levitt

  • Was an important representative of New York street photography.
  • Her œuvre is characterised by photographs of children at play.
  • Her works move between social documentation and photographic poetry.

Helen Levitt was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1913. She started her career as a photographer and filmmaker early on: At the age of 18, she began working for a portrait photographer. A meeting with Henri Cartier-Bresson in 1935 sparked Levitt's interest in more personal photography, whereupon she bought her Leica camera and took her first pictures on the streets of New York. While the artist began by photographing charcoal drawings of children on the walls of houses, over time she increasingly photographed New York society. It was for these photographs that Levitt became famous.

Her street photographs show people working, eating, in love or simply crossing the photographer's path. Most central to her œuvre, however, are children at play. Especially in the poor neighbourhoods of Manhattan and in the Bronx, Levitt turned her camera on colourful groups of young adolescents having fun and making faces together.

Levitt wanted to show with her works that harmonious coexistence is possible in the socially hierarchical and culturally complex New York. She countered the inequalities she was exposed to as the daughter of an immigrant family with lively images that seem to take the dynamics of her compositions from the subjects. Contrary

to the social documentary character of her works, Levitt was interested in the surreal: even the charcoal drawings and later the portraits of children lost in thought are dedicated to their fantasy.

In addition to photography, Levitt was also involved in the production of several film documentaries. Together with Janice Loeb and James Agee, she produced In the Street and The Quiet One, the latter of which was nominated for an Oscar in 1949. She then turned to colour photography in the 1950s. In this phase of her work, Levitt worked in a more planned way, thinking in advance about which subjects she wanted to capture. Her earlier photographs, on the other hand, were taken in the moment.

Among other artists, Levitt was admired for the spontaneity and poetry of her photographs. Even Walker Evans, for whom she worked as an assistant and who inspired her, praised her shots. Although Levitt photographed people unobserved, her photographs do not objectify them in a voyeuristic way, but focus on humanity. In this way, Levitt played a decisive role in shaping the genre of street photography. The artist died in 2009 at the age of 95.

Helen Levitt wurde 1913 in Brooklyn, New York geboren.
