The artist Glenn Brown

  • Contemporary British painter and sculptor who reinterprets existing art.
  • Many of his paintings are characterised by the trompe l'oeil technique.
  • Since 2008 he has turned to etching in the course of which he created his Layered Portraits.

British painter and sculptor Glenn Brown was born in Hexam, England in 1966. After a foundation course at Norwich School of Art, he studied fine arts at Bath College of Higher Education, followed by a master's degree in the same subject at Goldsmith's College, University of London.

Today, Brown is known for his appropriative style. Existing works by artists such as Frank Auerbach, Georg Baselitz and Howard Hodgkin form the basis of his art. Brown then varies and reinterprets these appropriated images by changing their colour, position or size. Painting predominantly in oil on wood, his grotesque yet intriguing paintings appear impasto and expressionistic at first glance, but closer inspection reveals the thin brushstrokes applied in many layers, sometimes creating the illusion of an almost photographic flat surface. He also works with the trompe l'oeil technique on many of his paintings.

In contrast to Brown's flat works stand his sculptures, which are created by the accumulation of thick layers of oil paint on structures or cast bronze. Here, too, he refers to the works of other artists with form and colour combinations. Since 2008, Brown has been making »etchings on the computer«, which is how his so-called Layered Portraits came into being. These are up to 15 drawings and portrait etchings by great artists such as Salvador Dalí, Lucian Freud, Urs Graf and Rembrandt van Rijn, which he superimposes, digitally processes and thus creates a new work.

Due to his appropriative style, Brown, like many representatives of Appropriation Art, has been confronted with accusations of copying and plagiarism on several occasions. For example, his nomination for the Turner Prize in 2000 caused controversy because his painting looked very similar to a work by Tony Roberts.
