Auction result misses estimated price range
This work of art by Horace Pippin could be acquired at Sothebys in New York in May last year for an unexpectedly low price. In the Modern Day Auction auction, the work Portrait of Major-General Smedley D. Butler, U.S.M.C, Retired changed hands for USD 315,000.00 (€ 293,542.07) - missing the lower end of the estimate range of USD 400,000.00 – 600,000.00. Admittedly, works by Horace Pippin have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Holy Mountain, I in November 2018 with an auction result of USD 3,255,000.00 (€ 2,874,679.86).
