Description
WANG KANGLE (1907-2006)
Mountains and Clouds
Scroll, mounted and framed, ink and colour on gold paper
98 x 181 cm. (38 1/2 x 71 1/4 in.)
Inscribed with a poem and signed, with two seals of the artist
Note:
Wang Kangle, a native of Fenghua City, Zhejiang province, first learnt Western techniques of painting before studying Chinese painting when he was 20. He learnt from the great masters Huang Binhong, Zheng Wuchang and Zhang Daqian. After the establishment of the Republic, he taught landscape painting whilst working at the Shanghai Commercial Press Design Workshop from 1924 to 1932. After his retirement in 1972, Wang spent fourteen years traveling the world and recording famous landmarks. Wang's painting is imbued with the styles of his old teachers, from the intensity of ink to the use of colour. While staying faithful to tradition, still he was able to articulate his own "rich ink and heavy colour" style.

A top price for Wang Kangle - as previously expected
In November 2009 Christies in Hong Kong held the auction Fine Chinese Modern Paintings, which included the work Mountains and Clouds by Wang Kangle. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of HKD 120,000.00 – 150,000.00, the actual price achieved of HKD 125,000.00 (€ 10,754.30) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. Even if this result could not surprise positively, Mountains and Clouds is the most expensive artwork by Wang Kangle that we have observed at auctions so far.
