The artist Titus Kaphar

  • US-American painter and sculptor.
  • Investigates the history of representation of African Americans.
  • Is a 2018 MacArthur Fellow.

Titus Kaphar says he came to art relatively late. In his sophomore year in junior college, he took courses in art history, after which he tried his hand at painting himself. In his mid-20s, he decided to become an artist. Born in Michigan in 1976, Kaphar taught himself a lot about painting and art history in museums. The missing or one-sided representation of African Americans has been the driving force behind his own works ever since.

Kaphar cites Robert Rauschenberg as a major inspiration. The latter's dismantling and recomposition of traditional art motifs and genres, called Combine Paintings, overcame the boundary between painting and sculpture. Kaphar's paintings often have dominant overpaintings or overgluing, the canvases fall out of their frames or are crumpled. Sometimes there are figures in the painting that push a painting aside like a curtain and expose one hidden underneath.

In terms of content, Kaphar deals with (unknown) fates of African Americans. His intensive research often leads him to depictions that deal with the dreams and emotions of slaves. Kaphar first gained attention with a classically painted portrait of US President Thomas Jefferson, painted like a curtain and half-covering a portrait of his naked slave Sally Hemings. A 1998 DNA test with Hemings' descendants proved that Jefferson had children with his slave girl, who was 14 years old at the beginning. This ended a 200-year-long controversy. Kaphar sees Hemings as a symbol of all female slaves who were forced to bear children by their tormentors.

Kaphar is represented by the renowned Gagosian Gallery. His paintings are in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art New York, the New Britain Museum of American Art, the Seattle Art Museum, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and more. In 2018, Kaphar was a MacArthur Fellow, an annual award for individuals who demonstrate excellence in their field.
