Auction result well in line with expectations
The work The Blockading Fleet off Cadiz in 1797, with Lord St Vincent's flagship Ville de Paris anchored in the foreground by Thomas Buttersworth, Sen. was sold in the TRAFALGAR BICENTENARY THE AGE OF NELSON,WELLINGTON&NAPOLEON auction at Christies in London in October 2005. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 3,000.00 – 5,000.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 3,120.00 (€ 4,601.06) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. Admittedly, works by Thomas Buttersworth, Sen. have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work 'Nelson's patent bridge for boarding First Rates' at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent, 14th February, 1797 in May 2003 with an auction result of GBP 24,675.00 (€ 34,378.49).
