Auction result well in line with expectations
The work A frigate and a Royal Navy cutter in a stiff breeze off Gibraltar by Thomas Buttersworth, Sen. was sold in the Maritime Art auction at Christies in London in November 2010. The price achieved of GBP 10,000.00 (€ 11,949.98) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 8,000.00 – 12,000.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Thomas Buttersworth, Sen. - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work 'Nelson's patent bridge for boarding First Rates' at the Battle of Cape St. Vincent, 14th February, 1797, which sold at auction in May 2003 for GBP 24,675.00 (€ 34,378.49).
