Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
When the work A young lady believed to be Lady Mary Boynton, full face in lace-bordered pink silk dress and lace bodice, pearls in her upswept brown hair by Samuel Cotes was auctioned at Christies in London in November 2000, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - GBP 600.00 but the actual price achieved was more than three times as high at GBP 1,997.50 (€ 3,264.83). Admittedly, works by Samuel Cotes have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work A boy, in pink-lined sea-green coat and waistcoat, lace-bordered white shirt, black hat adorned with black-lined pink ribbon and bow in his curling fair hair in December 2003 with an auction result of GBP 19,120.00 (€ 27,080.97).
