This artwork by Samuel Cotes achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in London in December 2020. In the Old Master and British Works on Paper, including Portrait Miniatures from the Pohl-Ströher Collection auction, the work Portrait of a lady, traditionally identifed as Mrs Gardiner, née Anne Grace Hynde sold for GBP 2,268.00 (€ 2,533.56) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 1,200.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Samuel Cotes achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work A boy, in pink-lined sea-green coat and waistcoat, lace-bordered white shirt, black hat adorned with black-lined pink ribbon and bow in his curling fair hair in December 2003 with an auction result of GBP 19,120.00 (€ 27,080.97).
