Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Blue Damascus by Chris Ofili was auctioned at Christies in New York in November last year, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 200,000.00 – 300,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 140,000.00 (€ 135,619.49). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Chris Ofili achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work The Holy Virgin Mary in June 2015 with an auction result of GBP 2,882,500.00 (€ 4,064,288.82).
