The work A young Lady seated on a red chair, facing right wearing a pink dress and lace fichu and pink bow, brown hair, inscribed and dated to the reverse 1847, rectangular giltmetal frame by William Maw Egley was sold in the THE CARTER COLLECTION auction at Christies in Melbourne in March 2001. The »bidding war« ended at AUD 2,232.50 (€ 1,239.12), 49% above the upper estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by William Maw Egley achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Catherine of Aragon in June 2002 with an auction result of GBP 20,315.00 (€ 31,422.70).
