Diane Arbus, born on 14 March 1923 as Diane Nemerov in New York City, died on 26 July 1971 at the same place, was a photographer who focussed on portraits of socially disadvantaged and outcast people. Her concern was to document New York city life through the photographic portrayal of different people.
Before she concentrated on portraying marginalised groups, she had already worked as a fashion photographer for major magazines such as Vogue, Glamour and Harper's Bazaar. After taking a workshop in 1958 with the then well-known Austrian portrait photographer Lisette Model, she opened the way for her into her future range of subjects as a photographer.
Model took her to Hubert's Museum and Club 82, where travesty shows took place regularly. Between 1960 and 1971 she continued to collaborate with fashion magazines and also with newspapers such as the New York Times and the Saturday Evening Post. Arbus received a Guggenheim Fellowship in 1963 and 1966 to support her creative work.
The resulting artworks were exhibited in 1967 as part of the New Documents exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Arbus committed suicide in 1971 at the age of 48 due to depression she had suffered since childhood. A year after her death, Arbus' photographs were featured in the US pavilion at the Venice Biennale. In 1977, her work was shown at documenta 6.

Diane Arbus, geb. am 14.03.1923 als Diane Nemerov in New York City, gest. am 26.07.1971 ebenda, war eine Kunstfotografin, die sich auf Porträts von sozial benachteiligten und von der Gesellschaft ausgestoßenen Menschen spezialisiert hatte. Ihr Anliegen war es, mit der fotografischen Darstellung unterschiedlicher Personen das New Yorker Stadtleben zu dokumentieren.
Bevor sie sich auf das Porträtieren von Randgruppen konzentrierte, war sie bereits als Modefotografin für große Magazine wie die Vogue, die Glamour und die Harper’s Bazaar tätig. Nachdem sie 1958 einen Workshop bei der damals bekannten österreichischen Porträtfotografin Lisette Model absolviert hatte, eröffnete diese ihr den Weg in das künftige Themenspektrum der Fotografin.
So nahm Model sie mit in das Hubert’s Museum und den Club 82, wo regelmäßig etwa Travestieshows stattfanden. Zwischen 1960 und 1971 arbeitete sie weiterhin für Modemagazine und auch für Zeitungen wie die New York Times oder die Saturday Evening Post. Arbus erhielt 1963 und 1966 jeweils ein Guggenheim-Stipendien zur Unterstützung ihrer freien Arbeit.
Die daraus entstandenen Werke wurden 1967 im Rahmen der Ausstellung New Documents im Museum of Modern Art in New York ausgestellt. Arbus beging 1971 im Alter von 48 Jahren aufgrund ihrer bereits seit dem Kindesalter bestehenden Depressionen Suizid. Ein Jahr nach ihrem Tod wurde der Pavillon der USA auf der Venedig-Biennale mit Fotografien von Arbus bespielt. 1977 waren ihre Stücke auf der documenta 6 zu sehen.

Beyond the Horizon
Diane Arbus complemented her supposedly smooth history by unceremoniously charging it with a self-written antagonist role: as a fashion photographer and photojournalist, she contrasted the glamorously staged at some point with her pronounced interest in the different. The artist's tense life ended too soon - today she would have turned 100.

Diane Arbus ergänzte ihre vermeintlich reibungslose Geschichte, indem sie sie kurzerhand mit einer selbstgeschriebenen Antagonistenrolle auflud: Als Modefotografin und Fotojournalistin kontrastierte sie das glanzvoll Inszenierte irgendwann mit ihrem ausgeprägten Interesse für das Andersartige. Zu früh endete das unter Spannung stehende Leben der Künstlerin – heute wäre sie 100 Jahre alt geworden.
