Auction result well in line with expectations
In September 2003 Christies in London held the auction British and Victorian Pictures, which included the work Portrait of Sir John Streynsham Master (1640-1723), bust-length, in brown robes, sculpted cartouche by John Riley. The price achieved of GBP 4,700.00 (€ 4,734.18) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 4,000.00 – 6,000.00. Admittedly, works by John Riley have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait of Frances Wiat, three-quarter-length, seated, in an ochre dress and blue wrap, holding an orange in her left hand, her right arm resting on a plinth, before a draped curtain in June 2000 with an auction result of GBP 25,850.00 (€ 40,975.43).
