The work Portrait of Sir William Monson, 4th Bt. (c. 1653-1727), three-quarter-length, before a column, a landscape beyond by John Riley was sold in the Old Masters auction at Christies in New York in October 2017. It achieved a price of USD 15,000.00 (€ 12,877.75), exceeding the upper end of the estimate range by 25%. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by John Riley - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of Frances Wiat, three-quarter-length, seated, in an ochre dress and blue wrap, holding an orange in her left hand, her right arm resting on a plinth, before a draped curtain, which sold at auction in June 2000 for GBP 25,850.00 (€ 40,975.43).
