In the Important Old Master Paintings, Part II auction, the work Portrait of John Sheffield (1648-1721), 1St Duke of Buckingham And Normanby When Earl of Mulgrave, Three-Quarter-Length, With The Order of St. George sold for USD 26,400.00 (€ 20,912.55) - well above the upper estimate of USD 15,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by John Riley; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Portrait of Frances Wiat, three-quarter-length, seated, in an ochre dress and blue wrap, holding an orange in her left hand, her right arm resting on a plinth, before a draped curtain sold at auction in June 2000 with the realized price of GBP 25,850.00 (€ 40,975.43).
