This artwork by John Riley achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in New York in April 2006. In the Important Old Master Paintings, Part II auction, the work Portrait of John Sheffield (1648-1721), 1St Duke of Buckingham And Normanby When Earl of Mulgrave, Three-Quarter-Length, With The Order of St. George sold for USD 26,400.00 (€ 20,912.55) - well above the upper estimate of USD 15,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by John Riley; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Portrait of Frances Wiat, three-quarter-length, seated, in an ochre dress and blue wrap, holding an orange in her left hand, her right arm resting on a plinth, before a draped curtain sold at auction in June 2000 with the realized price of GBP 25,850.00 (€ 40,975.43).
