Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Lady Alice Brownlow Née Sherard (1659-1721), Three-Quarter-Length by John Riley was sold in the Old Masters auction at Sothebys in London in May 2017. The price achieved of GBP 15,000.00 (€ 17,228.11) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 12,000.00 – 18,000.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by John Riley - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of Frances Wiat, three-quarter-length, seated, in an ochre dress and blue wrap, holding an orange in her left hand, her right arm resting on a plinth, before a draped curtain, which sold at auction in June 2000 for GBP 25,850.00 (€ 40,975.43).
