When the work A young officer, facing right in scarlet coat with gold epaulette, gold lace and blue collar, powdered hair; sky background by Frederick Buck was auctioned at Christies in London in October 2004, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - GBP 600.00 but the actual price achieved was more than three times as high at GBP 2,270.50 (€ 3,267.87). Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Frederick Buck; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot A young lady, facing right in ruffle bordered white silk dress, yellow sash, blue hat with yellow ribbon in her long curling brown hair sold at auction in June 2003 with the realized price of GBP 2,987.50 (€ 4,293.20).
