The exhibition is more than a traditional photography show: A World in Common: Contemporary African Photography highlights the cultural diversity of the African continent, its stories and varied landscapes. Starting July 6, photographs and film works will be on view at Tate Modern in London.
Approximately 1.4 billion people live on the African continent. Fast-growing megacities like Cairo, Kinshasa and Lagos exist alongside vast deserts and rainforests, some of which no human has ever set foot on. Everything between these extremes is the subject of the exhibition A World in common: Contemporary African Photography , which is being shown by the Tate Modern in London. But it is about more than the pure documentary representation of current developments in African countries. The diversity of cultures, their history, spiritualism and climate change are just a few examples of what the photographers on display have in common. Interested parties can view the works from July 6, 2023 to January 14, 2024.
Almost 40 artists may present their works in London. They mainly bring photographs, but visitors will also experience film and audio art in the exhibition. The selection of artists represents the cultural diversity of the continent, coming from different generations and countries. They include Leonce Raphael Abgodjelou (b. 1958) from Benin, Kudzanai Chiurai (b. 1981) from Zimbabwe, Hassan Hajjaj (b. 1961) from Morocco and Mário Macilau (b. 1984) from Mozambique.
