Johann Heinrich Füssli was not interested in the study of the naked female body in his drawings, but in the role and fashion of educated women. They are by no means submissive, but appear self-confident, active, are educated and bold. They defy the bizarre hairstyles and constricting shoes and waist bands in which they are dressed: Füssli's drawn women are by no means just the pretty companions of their men. The Kunsthaus Zürich presents in Füssli. Fashion − Fetish − Fantasy, the Kunsthaus Zürich is exhibiting around 60 of Füssli's works, which provide a new look at the famous painter's oeuvre. The show runs from February 24 to May 21, 2023.
Swiss painter Johann Heinrich Füssli (1741-1825) spent most of his life in England. His painterly exploration of dreams and visions of horror divided critics and viewers alike. He left behind one of the most idiosyncratic œuvres of his time. His most famous painting, The Nightmare (1781), shocked and fascinated recipients at its first exhibition at the Royal Academy of London.
