Artwork auctioned at eight times the upper estimate price
The work Chairman Mao (12 Pieces) by Zhang Hongtu was worth HKD 1,460,000.00 (€ 126,879.43) to a buyer in April 2011. This price was achieved in the auction The Ullens Collection - The Nascence of Avant Garde China at Sothebys in Hong Kong and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of HKD 180,000.00 many times over. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Zhang Hongtu; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Shen Zhou - Van Gogh #2 sold at auction in May 2007 with the realized price of HKD 1,440,000.00 (€ 137,117.37).
