Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by William Charles Ross achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in December 2003. In the Portrait Miniatures, Objects of Vertu, Icons, Russian and auction, the work Unknown sold for GBP 1,762.50 (€ 2,496.35) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 800.00. Admittedly, works by William Charles Ross have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Victoria, Princess Royal (1840-1901) As A Child, Holding The Long Blue Silk Ribbons Of Her Hat, In White Dress, Black Coat, Wearing A Blue-Lined Straw Hat Adorned With Black And Blue Ribbons On Her Curly Fair Hair; Landscape Background in November 2013 with an auction result of GBP 18,750.00 (€ 22,563.12).
