This artwork by Joshua Reynolds achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in New York in January 2024. In the Old Master Paintings and Sculpture: Part II auction, the work Portrait of Sir John Honywood (1757-1806), 4th Baronet, three-quarter-length, in a black coat, beside a tree with a dog sold for USD 113,400.00 (€ 99,108.55) - well above the upper estimate of USD 60,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Joshua Reynolds achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of Lady Frances Marsham, later Countess of Romney (1755-1795), full-length, in a yellow dress and pink shawl, in a park landscape in July 2014 with an auction result of GBP 4,786,500.00 (€ 6,037,281.44).
