In February this year Christies in London held the auction An Opulent Aesthetic: An Important Private Collection from an English Country House, which included the work Portrait of a lady, traditionally identified as Mrs. Elizabeth Sheridan (1754-1792), half-length, in a pink dress and gold embroidered sash, in a feigned oval by Joshua Reynolds. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 119,700.00 (€ 136,533.87), 50% above the upper estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Joshua Reynolds achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of Lady Frances Marsham, later Countess of Romney (1755-1795), full-length, in a yellow dress and pink shawl, in a park landscape in July 2014 with an auction result of GBP 4,786,500.00 (€ 6,037,281.44).
