Costumes of India. [Behar:] Printed at the Lithographic Press, January 1830. Oblong 8° (250 x 300mm). Mounted lithographic title and 12 hand-coloured lithographic plates mounted on card. Original card wrappers with mounted lithographic label to upper cover (rebacked and recornered, lightly soiled, label rubbed), contained in a half calf box. Provenance: Francis Gray Smart (armorial booklabel).
VERY RARE -- ONLY THREE COPIES CAN BE TRACED IN INSTITUTIONAL LIBRARIES British Library, Yale and University of Melbourne (this latter defective with 10 leaves only). According to AE, only one copy has sold at auction (Bloomsbury, 20 July 2006, lot 226). NOT IN ABBEY, COLAS OR LIPPERHEIDE.

In October 2012 Christies in London held the auction Travel, Science and Natural History, which included the work Unknown by Charles D'Oyly. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 4,000.00 (€ 4,973.30), 33% above the upper estimate. Admittedly, works by Charles D'Oyly have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Pushkar, India, with a parade of figures, elephants and horses in the foreground in October 2011 with an auction result of GBP 22,500.00 (€ 26,039.47).
Oberer Schätzpreis um 33 % übertroffen
Im Oktober 2012 führte Christies in London die Auktion Travel, Science and Natural History durch, in der auch die Arbeit Unknown von Charles D'Oyly zur Versteigerung kam. Das »Bietergefecht« endete beim Preis von GBP 4.000,00 (€ 4.973,30) und damit 33% über dem oberen Schätzpreis. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von Charles D'Oyly auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit Pushkar, India, with a parade of figures, elephants and horses in the foreground im Oktober 2011 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 22.500,00 (€ 26.039,47).
