This artwork by Ruth Asawa achieved an unexpectedly high price at Phillips in New York in December 2020. In the 20th c. & Contemporary Art Evening Sale auction, the work Untitled (S.045, Hanging Five-Lobed, Multilayered Continuous Form within a Form, with Spheres in the First, Second and Third Lobes) sold for USD 3,539,000.00 (€ 2,893,704.01) - well above the upper estimate of USD 2,000,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Ruth Asawa; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Untitled (S.387, Hanging Three Separate Layers of Three-Lobed Forms) sold at auction in November 2019 with the realized price of USD 4,095,000.00 (€ 3,716,308.19).
