This artwork by Rackstraw Downes achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in New York in September 2012. In the American Paintings, Drawings & Sculpture auction, the work Society Hill And Environs In The Drought Of '95, Jersey City sold for USD 71,500.00 (€ 55,616.05) - well above the upper estimate of USD 35,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Rackstraw Downes; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Approach To The Holland Tunnel With 75 Varick sold at auction in November 2016 with the realized price of USD 87,500.00 (€ 82,718.85).
