signed, dated and inscribed 'D Heins Fec:/1725/Miles Branthwayt/Ob 1751.' (lower left) and with inscription 'Miles Branthwayth 3d. son of Arthur/by Ann Dr. and heiress of Thomas Bacon Esq. who was 2d son of Sir Francis Bacon of the Bacons of/Hesset in Suffolk and one of/the judges of the Kings Bench/in 1642, Miles Ob: Nov. 1751 and/was buried in the family vault/at Hethel.' The »bidding war« ended at GBP 5,175.00 (€ 8,606.26), 48% above the upper estimate. Other works by John Theodore Heins have achieved even higher prices, we observed the highest auction result so far of GBP 6,214.00 (€ 8,920.29) in November 2003 for the work Portrait of Lucy, Lady Gage, daughter of William Knight, half-length, in an oyster satin dress and blue wrap, with a feathered headdress, feigned oval.
