Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Between Verona And Vicenza Stopping At The Railroad by John Ruskin was auctioned at Sothebys in New York in January 2019, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 15,000.00 – 20,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 12,500.00 (€ 10,913.22). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by John Ruskin achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Bellinzona, Switzerland, looking north towards the St. Gotthard pass in November 2003 with an auction result of GBP 274,050.00 (€ 393,402.83).
