Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Portrait of a gentleman, three-quarter-length, in a brown coat and wrap, his right arm resting on a plinth, a landscape beyond by John Riley was sold in the British and Victorian Paintings auction at Christies in London in September 2005. The price achieved of GBP 3,000.00 (€ 4,402.72) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 2,500.00 – 4,000.00. Admittedly, works by John Riley have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait of Frances Wiat, three-quarter-length, seated, in an ochre dress and blue wrap, holding an orange in her left hand, her right arm resting on a plinth, before a draped curtain in June 2000 with an auction result of GBP 25,850.00 (€ 40,975.43).
