Auction result well in line with expectations
In June 2001 Christies in London held the auction British Pictures 1500-1850, which included the work Portrait Of A Gentleman, Three-Quarter-Length, In A Brown Cloak, In An Interior by John Riley. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 7,000.00 – 10,000.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 7,050.00 (€ 11,711.45) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by John Riley - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of Frances Wiat, three-quarter-length, seated, in an ochre dress and blue wrap, holding an orange in her left hand, her right arm resting on a plinth, before a draped curtain, which sold at auction in June 2000 for GBP 25,850.00 (€ 40,975.43).
