Auction result well in line with expectations
In July 2021 Sothebys in London held the auction Old Master & British Works on Paper, which included the work Portrait of Thomas Girtin (1775-1802) by John Opie. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 3,000.00 – 5,000.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 3,024.00 (€ 3,546.27) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. Admittedly, works by John Opie have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait Of Sir James Earle, Half-Length, Seated, In A Brown Coat And Striped Waistcoat; And Portrait Of Mary, Lady Earle, Half-Length, Seated At A Piano, In A White Dress And A Grey Coat in June 2001 with an auction result of GBP 10,340.00 (€ 17,176.80).
