Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Portrait Of John Penwarne Junior (B. 1758), Resting On A Mossy Bank, Holding A Book by John Opie was sold in the Old Masters auction at Sothebys in London in April 2016. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 3,000.00 – 5,000.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 3,250.00 (€ 4,154.47) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. Admittedly, works by John Opie have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait Of Sir James Earle, Half-Length, Seated, In A Brown Coat And Striped Waistcoat; And Portrait Of Mary, Lady Earle, Half-Length, Seated At A Piano, In A White Dress And A Grey Coat in June 2001 with an auction result of GBP 10,340.00 (€ 17,176.80).
