Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Portrait Of A Young Girl, Said To Be Lady Bathurst by John Opie was auctioned at Sothebys in New York in February 2013, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 8,000.00 – 12,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 6,250.00 (€ 4,778.65). However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by John Opie - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait Of Sir James Earle, Half-Length, Seated, In A Brown Coat And Striped Waistcoat; And Portrait Of Mary, Lady Earle, Half-Length, Seated At A Piano, In A White Dress And A Grey Coat, which sold at auction in June 2001 for GBP 10,340.00 (€ 17,176.80).
