Auction result misses estimated price range
In February 2013 a collector was able to acquire the work Portrait Of A Man, Said To Be The Poet Thomas Moore by John Opie for USD 8,125.00 (€ 6,212.25). This price was achieved in the auction Old Master and 19th Century European Paintings and Drawings, including Property from the Estate of Giancarlo Baroni at Sothebys in New York and was even below the estimate range of USD 12,000.00 – 14,000.00 set by the auction house. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by John Opie - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait Of Sir James Earle, Half-Length, Seated, In A Brown Coat And Striped Waistcoat; And Portrait Of Mary, Lady Earle, Half-Length, Seated At A Piano, In A White Dress And A Grey Coat, which sold at auction in June 2001 for GBP 10,340.00 (€ 17,176.80).
