Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work A girl slumbering under a tree in a landscape by John Opie was auctioned at Sothebys in New York in May last year, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 6,000.00 – 8,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 5,040.00 (€ 4,696.67). However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by John Opie - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait Of Sir James Earle, Half-Length, Seated, In A Brown Coat And Striped Waistcoat; And Portrait Of Mary, Lady Earle, Half-Length, Seated At A Piano, In A White Dress And A Grey Coat, which sold at auction in June 2001 for GBP 10,340.00 (€ 17,176.80).
