The work Portrait of James White (1745-1825), seated half-length, in a maroon coat, holding a book in his right hand by John Opie was sold in the British and Victorian Paintings auction at Christies in London in May 2005. Here, the upper estimate of GBP 2,000.00 was slightly exceeded - the artwork found a new owner for GBP 2,040.00 (€ 3,011.68). Admittedly, works by John Opie have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait Of Sir James Earle, Half-Length, Seated, In A Brown Coat And Striped Waistcoat; And Portrait Of Mary, Lady Earle, Half-Length, Seated At A Piano, In A White Dress And A Grey Coat in June 2001 with an auction result of GBP 10,340.00 (€ 17,176.80).
