In December 2008 Sothebys in London held the auction Early British & Irish Paintings, which included the work Portrait Of Captain Joseph Lamb Popham R.N. (1771-1833) by John Opie. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 15,000.00 (€ 15,754.36), 25% above the upper estimate. Other works by John Opie have achieved even higher prices, we observed the highest auction result so far of GBP 10,340.00 (€ 17,176.80) in June 2001 for the work Portrait Of Sir James Earle, Half-Length, Seated, In A Brown Coat And Striped Waistcoat; And Portrait Of Mary, Lady Earle, Half-Length, Seated At A Piano, In A White Dress And A Grey Coat.
