Auction result misses estimated price range
In December 2008 a collector was able to acquire the work Melancholia Recto; Study Of A Male Nude Verso by John Opie for GBP 2,375.00 (€ 2,494.44). This price was achieved in the auction Early British Drawings, Watercolours and Portrait Miniatures at Sothebys in London and was even below the estimate range of GBP 3,000.00 – 4,000.00 set by the auction house. Admittedly, works by John Opie have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait Of Sir James Earle, Half-Length, Seated, In A Brown Coat And Striped Waistcoat; And Portrait Of Mary, Lady Earle, Half-Length, Seated At A Piano, In A White Dress And A Grey Coat in June 2001 with an auction result of GBP 10,340.00 (€ 17,176.80).
