Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
When the work Portrait of a Harlem Preacher, 'Daddy Grace' and Congregation, 1938; Untitled (Young black woman with studio background) by Jan van der Zee was auctioned at Phillips in New York in October 2014, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - USD 3,000.00 but the actual price achieved was more than three times as high at USD 11,250.00 (€ 8,978.45). Admittedly, works by Jan van der Zee have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Untitled (West 127th Street, Harlem), 1932 in December 2011 with an auction result of USD 52,500.00 (€ 40,468.67).
