Sold at the lower estimate price
The work Seals Basking on Pancake Ice, Antarctica, c. 1911 by Herbert George Ponting was auctioned at Christies in New York in December 2012. The result of USD 5,000.00 (€ 3,791.90) was exactly at the lower end of the estimate range of USD 5,000.00 – 7,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Herbert George Ponting achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-13: Ponting's three master albums of contact prints in September 2010 with an auction result of GBP 169,250.00 (€ 195,755.59).
