Auction result misses estimated price range
This work of art by Herbert George Ponting could be acquired at Christies in New York in December 2012 for an unexpectedly low price. In the The National Geographic Collection: The Art of Exploration auction, the work Mount Erebus Seen Over a Water-Worn Iceberg, c. 1911 changed hands for USD 4,750.00 (€ 3,602.31) - missing the lower end of the estimate range of USD 5,000.00 – 7,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Herbert George Ponting achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-13: Ponting's three master albums of contact prints in September 2010 with an auction result of GBP 169,250.00 (€ 195,755.59).
